Garden of Rules, 2021

Mechanimal, 2021

Connecting with Anonymous Cormorants

Over the past two years, aside from work-related conversations, the person I’ve had the most conversations with is the owner of a flower shop. It’s fascinating that I, someone who isn’t accustomed to exchanging daily stories over phone calls or messages, made a new friend during a period when I could hardly go out. Our conversations mainly revolved around how to assess the condition of plants. Since the most crucial part, the roots isn’t visible, it’s not easy to read the state of plants. I’ve often overlooked slight changes in leaf color or faint spots, nearly killing them as a result. I’ve continuously moved around to touch the soil surface, probe the subsoil, and capture subtle changes in the overall expression of the plants.

Every month when the Ficus shed a leaf for unknown reasons, I frequented the flower shop like an emergency room. The flower shop unnie and I tested factors like light intensity, humidity, and ventilation, sharing the information we gathered. As I left with the Ficus in my arms, she asked me to simply watch over it for a while. Watching over it meant suppressing the desire to do something. She was thrilled to see a photo of the Ficus suddenly starting to grow after five months, with five large new leaves.

For the past few months, the flower shop unnie has been giving me plants one by one, suggesting that we grow them together. There was a group of people who frequented the flower shop, sharing the status of their plants with each other. I realized I had been accepted into this group, with no regular meetings or even a name. It felt like leveling up. Every week, new varieties of plants come into the flower shop, and some are taken to the homes of people in the group. Information from people who have never gathered in one place is gathered at the flower shop. Since I can provide different environments from the person who can accommodate twelve pots of Eucalyptus, we each bring different varieties and analyze why Caladium thrives particularly well in our home. Despite not knowing each other’s names or using any titles, stories of daily life or the past seep into the sharing of information about the plants. Along with the exchange of advice, comfort, and encouragement, this group gathers temporarily without any specific information about its members and then disperses again.

Feeling burdened by the idea of regular meetings, I planned a workshop to capitalize on the freedom and tension that arise when anonymous people converse online, as well as the sense of stability they feel in their physical surroundings. I wanted to explore how unfamiliar women, without knowing each other’s names, ages, or faces, could gather to discuss the melancholy each may carry within their individual spaces. At the start of the workshop, participants were provided with a Google Docs link. People accessed the Google Docs under the name like “Anonymous Cormorant” and left traces on completely blank pages without hesitation. Without knowing who wrote what, one person would begin a sentence only to have another continue it before it was completed. Though each narrative was distinct, as they converged, a common thread emerged beneath the various reasons and manifestations of melancholy. While sharing their own stories, participants realized they were also part of a collective narrative. Embracing this format where individual stories meshed together in a disorderly fashion, I refined the approach with each session, experimenting with nine shared rules* at the outset and dividing participants into subgroups with emoji-based inventories, each entering different Google Docs links. Through these experiments, Loopntale coined the term “DocGame” for this format.

Loopntale, which I’m part of, utilizes various genres and platforms based on the communication methods inherent in gaming. Returning to South Korea in February 2020 for an exhibition schedule and then being forced to stay indefinitely, I had to find ways to adapt to the new situation with Loopntale’s works. The game that allows multiple participants to access the virtual world at the exhibition through their smartphones to play together was left abandoned in empty spaces for months right after the exhibition opened, as Beijing came under lockdown. Works that preferred physical connectivity among players in real space were no longer feasible, and we could no longer directly observe their reactions, whether they interpreted the game or not. We hardly went out, and our workspace gradually filled with potted plants. I often thought of the pink rose I left behind in Germany and felt guilty about it being confined to a pot.

This year, Loopntail planned to showcase the work online regardless of whether the situation has improved or not. One of them was a game where players took care of the potted plants left in a commercial building during the lockdown period of the pandemic. Players accessed the game link to assist a talkative artificial intelligence in caring for the potted plants inside the building. Although the condition of the plants was displayed numerically, the human player entrusted the analysis to the AI without knowing exactly what it meant. The only action the human player could take was to press buttons to replace the act of looking at, listening to, and touching the plants. This process included observing the plants without taking any action for a while and trying to understand plants with expressions different from humans.

In a situation where humans cannot physically exist, taking responsibility for pets became the most important action for players in the next game as well. Someone living in the virtual world tweets asking for help in finding a missing human-administrator. In the world created by the human-administrator who researches future species, the only way he can interact with the outside world is through the Twitter sharing function embedded in the simulation. Creatures living in four different zones (indoor, airborne, aquatic, and terrestrial organisms) have their own needs, which the human player can fulfill after accessing the game link. If players gather information in the game world, solve puzzles to open zones, or help organisms in meaningful ways, the contents and the snapshot images of the scenes are automatically sent to Twitter. The information gathered by players and the results of their actions accumulated bit by bit in the Twitter feed over the course of three days. On the final day, the full story of the human-administrator’s disappearance is revealed. We interpreted research on future species as research on companion species including humans, and wanted to talk about life forms evolving through the adaptation of coexistence in the city. We hoped to summon urban companion species through gameplay while metaphorically representing the characteristics of potted plants, subway pigeons, aquarium fish, and parking lot cats living together with humans.

Next year, through what game shall we engage in conversations with people? Even if the situation improves, we may not return to the conversational methods we used two years ago as if nothing had ever happened. We’ll continue to evolve the communication methods we experimented with online, aiming to find states of maximum comfort for each individual while fostering loose forms of solidarity. Regardless of the circumstances, it will always start with considering how, where, and with whom we’ll converse. Because games serve as a medium for conversation which includes efforts to understand others in order to accept them. Planned as this year’s final project is a game where I state my own rules, grasp another’s rules, and contemplate points where both sets of rules can coexist. Considering the inherent subjectivity and potential for misunderstandings in the process of conversation, envisioning and experimenting with various forms of conversation through games seems to be Loopntail’s ongoing mission.
